Conexiones Distanciadas

Artist Statement

Conexiones Distanciadas is a collection of works that is paying tribute to the women in my life that had some kind of impact on my journey to getting my BFA. Each painting and person in them are deeply connected to me and in turn to each other. The connections I share between these women are very close but also very estranged. We are either separated by physical or emotional distance, but through it all the bonds we’ve established remain strong and intact. These pieces are meant to represent the pivotal moments in our relationship that shaped me and further pushed me in the trajectory of acquiring a BFA. In short, I do it for them and could not have done it without them in my corner.

Parallels

Parallels is two separate paintings, each measuring 24x48 inches. The paintings are meant to be displayed with a gap between them, to illustrate the physical distance between my mother and grandmother, her mother. The concept being that each painting is missing its other half and when placed together they become a perfect square, 4’x4’. However, similar to parallel lines, their paths can’t intersect.

Small Worlds

Small Worlds is a 36”x24“ painting on a 70”x48” canvas. The piece signifies my teenage years and the mindset my friends and I had at 15 years old, that we knew so much and were grown, when in reality there was still so much to learn, experience, and see out in the world. In a sense, there was a whole world of unexplored and unprimed canvas waiting for us.

Oasis

Oasis is a 48”x36” painting meant to represent my aunt who opened up her home to me while attending university. The painting is made without a border to better resemble a wall, with the opening acting like a window into the safe space she made for me. In a time and place in my life where there were so many big changes happening, she helped me have some kind of stability.
